Senegal onion import must be stopped for three years

The chairman of the international profession of the onion (IOPS), Mamadou Ba, is advising Senegal to stop the import of onions for three years. The import, which was stopped by the government in February, was going to be activated again in September. But according to Ba, it's impossible for the onion growers to pay back the 0.38 million Euro already. The sales problems in the region Niayes are especially large.

The production in Potou, one of the most important places in Niayes, is around 100,000 tonnes. The national production is 240,000 tonnes. It's really important for growers that the sector is reorganised and that they can sell their products. If there's no opportunity for this, it could cause huge problems for the growers. The demand for imported onions is bigger than the demand for the local onions.
