Korea: Hongwon Trading set to become leading tomato exporter
Founded in 1998, the Hongwon is one of the major tomato exporters using "Mitori" as a brand which has a double meaning. Mitori means the "beautiful tomato made by soil" and the "beautiful tomato village".
"Hongwon Trading is set to become the leading export company, we have been striving to satisfy the demands of buyers 100%," said Mr. Chi Hyun-ho, President of Hongwon Trading.
"Buyers are very happy with our efforts, and this helps us in establishing trust," he added.
The Hongwon Trading Co. prefers to work directly with the farmers with close supervision in producing tomatoes especially to watch closely the sizes.
Chi's work in the Tomato Exporting and Developing Board (TEDB) has been an advantage in keeping them updated with new techniques, post-harvesting management and marketing strategies for export.
Moreover, Hongwon Trading Co. set up a sorting facility in Haman-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do where tomatoes are being sorted and packed.
The small and middle size tomatoes are more attractive among foreign buyers than the large ones.
One of their foreign buyers is Sky Lark. Sky Lark operates major restaurants in Japan and overseas and has been visiting Hongwon Trading once every two months.
"They visited the tomato farms on which they have contract and also the sorting facility which Sky Lark inspected on the spot to validate the safety of our products," Chi added.
Early this year, Hongwon Trading Co. started to introduce the tomatoes into Greater China where the consumers prefer small tomatoes. The company has also recently invested in a small size packaging system. They will be ready to export to Greater China in the second half of this year.
The company will start exporting tomatoes to Hong Kong early next year.
