Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at the top of German seeds production

Dr. Till Backhaus, Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Consumer Protection recently gave a speech to honour the 20th anniversary of the seed association Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He mentioned: "With the efforts of new varieties and certified seed and plant material the association supplies an important contribution to the increase of the harvest yield in plant cultivation and with that also in the development of our federal state." The seeds and planting material production is traditionally extremely important for the agricultural economy and is the basis of successful harvest development. "The seeds and planting material production is the basis of the surplus value within agriculture and horticulture and is the basis for the production of healthy foodstuffs," as per the minister.

Backhaus referred to the fact that federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern compared to other German federal states holds a top position in the seeds production. The quality of the seed and planting material from the federal state is highly appreciated locally and outside Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The export volume of the seeds and planting material from the federal state is in excess of 50%. A large part of this is exported worldwide.

The aim of the seed association, which consists of 156 companies, is to produce and sell quality seeds and planting material from Meckelburg-Vorpommern in line with market regulations. The minister emphasized: "The growers of the plants and the ones increasing are at the basis of the agrarian surplus value."
