"UK: WPC "better than expectations"

The World Potato Congress which took place 27-30th May 2012 in Edinburgh Scotland, was a big success. The event was well organised with many varied and interesting speakers as well as Industry Interaction Tours on the last day and full social program.

Allan Stevenson, Chairman of the Potato Council, said the event had been "fantastic, better than expectations". It had been his ambition for years to have the event in Edinburgh, a great city and great venue and due to the hard work of all the team the event was a sell out.

The only down side was that many Scottish, as well as English potato growers could not attend as they were still planting, running a few weeks behind because of the wet spring, this was also the case on Allan's own farm. He went on to say this only highlights risks involved in potato growing.

The logo of the WPC - "Think global - Win local", was certainly the theme of event and hopefully, said Allan, it stretched delegate's minds to see the global picture.

The speakers came from different corners of the globe as well as different areas of the industry, including executives from the top UK potato suppliers, top scientists, nutritionists, market and retail experts.

On the last day the delegates boarded buses to visit various farms, seed houses and packers in Scotland.
