Jan Engelen, Veiling Hoogstraten:
"Strawberry volumes smaller, average price higher"
The strawberry market develops quite differently as far as volumes are concerned than last year. "We are quite a number of kilograms behind compared to last season" Jan Engelen of Veiling Hoogstraten tells. "From the beginning up till yesterday we auctioned 1.8 million kilo's less." But there is also an other side. "Because of the smaller volumes the average price is at a high level. Sales have increased compared to last year. On average this week prices are around Euro 2.33. For the time of the year and the volume expected this week, that is not wrong" the commercial manager concludes.
Up to now good average prices
He mentions that prices were good actually right from the start. "We did have a 'change over week' when there were still Spanish ones in the market. There was a short relapse, but that was quickly rectified and up to now we had good average prices."
He expects the quantities to increase quickly. "Because of the nice weather last week we expect more volumes during the coming weeks." Would there then not be too many strawberries on the market? "I expect that this will have an influence on prices. These will probably decrease more. But if more kilograms are available with beautiful weather and prices are lower more will in general be consumed. Everybody has been looking forward to nice weather for a long time and we notice interest in strawberries increasing. As a result the market remains balanced. A somewhat cooler weather is expected for the coming weeks, but the sun remains and therefore probably the consumption as well."
"There are hardly any obstacles"
The strawberries are exported to various countries. "A lot goes to our most important export countries, Scandinavia and France" Jan tells. "Also the local market is a good customer at the moment." As far as competition is concerned Veiling Hoogstraten is in a good position, according to Jan. "There are hardly any obstacles. In neighbouring countries such as England and Germany open ground cultivation has started. We are in a change-over period between glasshouse and tunnel. The Netherlands hardly have any tunnel cultivation and are changing from glass to open ground. As a result there are only few volumes and they partly collect from us."
