Italy: 2012 'Maggiolina' onion season starts at Freddi company
'Maggiolina' onion is destined purely to industry and to sale as a fresh product on foreign markets, mainly France, Germany and Belgium.
As Matteo Freddi explains: "Maggiolina onion represent a classic crop for onion production in the province of Parma since the Sixties. Pride of local exporters was distributed in the whole of Northern Europe until Dutch people became more expert in its cultivation and sale, with prices significantly lower than ours, and till the overlap with Borettana onion production occurred. Borettana onion is the favourite of Italian consumers because it is sweeter and soft."
The harvest of 'Maggiolina' onion has begun some days ago, a little earlier. An excellent quality product is expected with a medium size. On 11th June will begin the sale to foreign markets.
Various packages are available: more requested one is 30x40 wooden box, with 5 kilos of product, 15/20 and 20/30 mm in size. For Italian onion peelers sizes are 31/37, 37/42, 42/55. The product is also available in 250 kg plastic bins.
"The campaign goes on for a month till the arrival of Dutch product, when the stress on supply push prices and attractiveness of our onions down" Matteo says.
As for Borettana onion, another specialty of Freddi company, the harvest is slightly later and should start at the end of June.
