Early potatoes from North Rhine-Westfalia

In the German federal state North-Rhine Westfalia on about 3,200 HA early potatoes for consumption are grown. The harvest yield is about 130,000 tons and especially the area Rhineland is important for the production of early potatoes. The area is third after Lower Saxony and Pfalz in the cultivation of early potatoes.

With early potatoes the very early varieties, such as Anais, Berber, Christa, Gloria and Annabelle are meant. Already in January and February these early potatoes were pre-germinated, so that planting could take place in the middle of March and harvesting between May and July. They are especially grown to be eaten fresh, as they cannot be stored for an unlimited period. Sales from the farm are important when selling early potatoes, especially during the asparagus season. The early potato season ends in the middle of August.

At the end of May the first small quantity is harvested. These are mainly for direct sales. In the beginning of June supply to wholesalers and market traders starts. The weather conditions of the last few months have been good for the potatoes. Growth is optimum and consumers will be able to buy the nicely formed and good tasting Rheinische potatoes at farms, weekly markets and in the retail.
