Rob de Lijn, Unitrade Holland
"Quiet start vegetable export to Italy"
The export of Dutch vegetables to Italy is slow to start. This as told by Rob de Lijn of Unitrade Holland, which is completely focused on the export of fruit and vegetables to Italy. "As far as that is concerned the start of the season is completely different from last year, when at the start large volumes were involved, but the Dutch vegetable trade came back to nil at the end of May. Now the export had a quieter start, but I trust that the export will remain stable."
"The Dutch pepper prices were at the start of the season last year a lot lower than this season. Furthermore the Spanish iceberg lettuce continues to fetch low prices" Rob explains. "Furthermore it is clear that because of the economic crisis only large volumes are sold, as for instance when actions are planned, but that, I think, also applies to far more European countries."
Tomatoes on the vine in volumes, iceberg lettuce and chicory are the most important export products for Unitrade Holland. The iceberg lettuce is being exported by the company to Italy for years already under their own hallmark 'Unique'. Unitrade supply both supermarkets and wholesale markets.
"Italy has its own vegetable productions in Sicily, Naples and Verona, but in general Dutch vegetables are being preferred, because we are in a position to supply a uniform product in relatively large volumes. Because of the fragmentation of sales in Italy it is more difficult to supply a uniform product in the desired packing and in addition Italy is not self-supporting all year round."
