The number of mangoes sold in Germany in the first three months of 2012 compared to the same period in the two previous years decreased by more than half. This according to the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI).

3,22 euro/kg. That is clearly more than the previous years, when the price per kg. was between euro 1,71 and euro 1,74. High prices are normally the result of tight supply and this was indeed the case during the first months of 2012. Based on provisional figures imports from January to March 2012 decreased from 15,300 tons to about 11,000 tons. Especially from Peru, which is the most important country of supply, less was imported. The reason being a smaller Peruvian mango harvest in the 2011/2012 season. The import shortages were partly compensated by shipments from Brazil.
Despite the market shortages and the high prices mango special offers were still arranged by the retail. According to figures from AMI 127 times in the first 14 weeks of 2011 mangoes were advertised 127 times. In 2012 this was still 116 times. Whilst in 2011 the price for each mango was on 29 occasions more 0,50 cents, this only happened once in 2012.
