Argentina: Rhythm is back for the export lemon harvest to the EU

The lemon harvest and other citrus is moving more firmly thanks to producers who have their farms and Production Units, approved to comply with the requirements stipulated in the Certification Program from the Fresh Citrus Fruit for the European Union and other countries with similar quarantine restrictions, said Thematic NOA South Regional Coordinator of Senasa (based in Tucumán), Rafael Rodriguez Prados.

Currently, "the harvest has a delay of almost 40 days", if we take as reference what
happened last year, because in that campaign shipping started in late March and early April. "Shipments from last season were increasing progressively up to the end of May with full capacity," said the specialist.

This year "we just started 10 days ago, both because of labor problems which the sector had, and the rains during all of April," he said. Currently works along the lines of business that the private sector has with Europeans and Russians importers. "The fruit you're packing is of very good quality and healthy; we know there will be fewer fruit due to drought, which was bad for production, but for optimal health," he said.

The maximum number of packages that are within the program are 32 and now there are 28, with nearly complete shifts. I figure these days the ones that are missing will start, he said with an encouraging tone.

Rodriguez Prado said that 17 containers were already sent with the Certificate of Origin in Tucumán, he believes that several more will be sent. "This procedure is very good, as it allows containers to be sent from Tucuman to European markets that are only open in target markets avoiding damage to the fruit and packing and saves time and money.
