Promotion campaign should get the German consumer eating potatoes again
Potatoes are versatile, healthy, and tasty. This is the message the Deutsche kartoffelhandelsverband (DKHV) wants to send to the customer. Because of the decreasing sales figures the association is worried about the potato, which used to the a primary source of food in Germany. "We want to counteract this negative tendency", says DKHV-president Dieter Tepel. That's why the campaign 'Die Kartoffel, Voll lecker' (The potato, really tasty) started yesterday in the whole of Germany. With signs, which the association shared out among the potato growers, and an internet performance the people should become aware of the potato again.
At the court of the Heyes brothers in Willich Tepel recently handed over the first signs. Around 40 representatives of growers unions and packaging companies recently met at the court to celebrate the start of the campaign. Grower Thomas Heyes has good expectations of the campaign: "With the sign we remind the consumer of the potato." He also notices that the turnover of consumption potatoes, is decreasing. Besides the signs, which are placed at the potato cultivation companies, the campaign logo will also be stamped on trucks and packaging.
The campaign's target group is mainly younger consumers. "The sales figures for the 50 plus generation are stable", says Tepel. "It's the younger people that would rather cook pasta or rice. This is quick, but not a healthier alternative."
