15 days ago Brazil was not permitting the entry of apples from Argentina. "We were very surprised, we've never seen a situation like this," said a sector leader. The country consumes a quarter of apple and pear exports.
For two weeks, Alto valle de Rio Negro fruit companies in Argentina have been concerned about the obstacles imposed on their products by Brazil.
Brazil, which imports about 25% of Argentinian apple and pear production, is also the main consumer of the fruit in the second half of the semester, so marketing would present significant vulnerability.
Marcelo Loyarte, President of the Argentina Chamber of Integrated Fruit Growers (CAFI), says the situation creates "deep concern" because "there is no way to replace Brazil as a destination for exports."
"If situation becomes complicated for Brazilian exports, the impact on the industry will be very detrimental," said the fruit grower leader, who represents the organization that brings together the main producers of the Alto Valle de Rio Negro and Neuquén.
