UK: Kanzi exceptional storage capabilities

Kanzi apple have proved their storage capabilities, having been in chill rooms since harvest last year. James Simpson from UK fruit and vegetable producer Adrian Scripps, say the last of the UK apples have been used and there is a small amount of Dutch Kanzi still in store.

The quality of the stored apples is very good, which Simpson credits to the variety itself as well as specially designed chill rooms, which have been perfected after 4-5 years of trialling with research partners.

Adrian Scripps is looking forward to the first arrivals of Kanzi from South Africa, being the first year the volume will be small, one container, but Simpson said this will increase significantly in 2013.

As for the coming Northern Hemisphere season, the growing conditions have not been ideal for apples. The relatively mild winter was not conducive for apple production, but there has been good flowering on the Kanzi apples and now this period of warm weather should contribute to good fruit size.

The UK production of Kanzi apples will increase from last season from 2100 tons to between 2800 and 3000 tons. Simpson says that Kanzi apples are placed firmly in the top three premium apple, no mean feat considering the huge competition between the club varieties.
