Korean Agri- Foods sales growth increase at 30.8 %

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MIFAFF) has been enhancing sector productivity and boosting export opportunities in offering Korean agri-foods from seafood to fresh product to processed foods worldwide.

Korean agri-foods achieved US$7.69 billion sales last year which is a 30.8% increase from 2010.

Korea is now on its way to achieving US$10 billion sales for exports this year and $20 billion in 2017.

1980 was a downturn for the Korean agri-foods where sales were reported to be only US$2 billion. Yet, changes were seen in 1986 and sales continued to increase when Korea hosted the Olympic Games in 1988. It made a huge impact setting a sales record of US$3 billion.

It took a further twenty years to increase the sales to $4.5 billion in 2008. Despite the downturn, the MIFAFF continued to strengthen Korean agri-foods competitiveness in the global market by developing various activities worldwide.

Hard work paid off. The sales started to rise rapidly increasing from $4.5 billion in 2008, $4.9 billion in 2009, $5.88 in 2010 and $7.69 billion last year.

The fresh products being offered are apples, pear, sweet persimmon, strawberries, paprikas, tomatoes and mushrooms. Japan, Canada, Australia, US, Hongkong, Singapore and the Netherlands are the major export countries for these products.

Gyeongsangbuk-do, Chungju-si and Yesan-gu of the Chungcheong region are the main production areas for apples producing 433,000 tons last year and are expected to produce 490,000 tons this year.

On the other hand, pears grow in the Naju-si and Cheonnan-si regions and produced 291,000 tons last year which were exported to the US and Taiwan. Singo pear is the main variety for export and season starts at the end of September to mid- October.

Strawberries are also exported and available December to April. Maehyang is the main variety and being cultivated in Gyeongsangnam-do with a hard flesh and high sugar content.

Korean strawberries are getting more popular among consumers from Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia to the list. MIFAFF plans to strengthen the market by cultivating more varieties, expanding production areas for export and establishing a cold chain system.

Furthermore, mushrooms and paprika are steadily growing every year. US$3.82 million of mushrooms were exported last year and this year, the goal is $4.8 million. New package design and technology is being developed to ensure the freshness of mushroom and improve its quality.

Japan remains the main export country for Korean paprika which is available all year round for export. The Korean paprika is also becoming popular among Canadian and Australian consumers.

The Japanese market also is the main market for Korean mini and vine tomatoes reaching US$9.7 million total sales last year while sweet persimmon is popular in Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada.

MIFAFF and Korean tomato producers continue to innovate in growing tomatoes every year and improve agricultural practices in order to increase the export volume. They are also developing a customized package design, increasing export consultations in the production areas and establishing a phased production traceability system.

Other Korean products available on the market which contributed to the growth are roses, kimchis, ginsengs, citron teas, noodles, sauces, makgeolli and seafoods products such as seaweed, abalone and flounder.
