For the 2013 campaign

Peru: Custard apple could double exports

The orchard specialist from the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation (INIA), William Daga Ávalos, pointed out that, in the 2013 campaign, they expect to double exports of custard apples, presently above the 50,000 tons, due to good cultivation.

"Expectations for the next year are that the market will keep growing. Now we must think about working on fertilization, pruning and handling etc.. For that, we are recommending that producers invest a bit more in fertilizers and pesticides," he said.

In that sense, he pointed out that the main markets for this fruit are Ecuador and Bolivia, that get 20% of the national exports. Also to highlight as importers Canada and the European Union (mainly France and Spain).

Moreover, he mentioned the talks with the Association of Exporters from Japan for Peru to get into that market.
