State of emergency declared

Earthquake in Northern Italy: probably more than 200 million Euro damages for agro-food sector

Giving comment on the first results of the monitoring of damages caused by the earthquake in Northern Italy, the Italian Minister of Agriculture, Mario Catania, said: "The Council of Ministers has declared a state of emergency for the affected areas. The Ministry is at work to complete the monitoring as soon as possible to allow the companies to return to their producing activity. The initial evaluation calculates damages in agro-food sector for more than 200 million Euro."

The earthquake on 20th May involved four provinces: Ferrara, Modena, Mantova and Rovigo. In the affected areas more than 10,000 farms operate, less than 1,000 livestock and hundreds of processing and stock factories of agro-food products. Involved acreage is more than 250,000 hectares.
