UK: Asparagus in time for Jubilee

After keeping us guessing and waiting and praying throughout most of May, that most British of vegetables has finally arrived giving plenty of home grown asparagus in time for the long weekend and Jubilee celebrations.

The majority of UK retailers are now stocking 100% British asparagus and customers are urged to make the most of the crop now that it is here. There are five weeks left of the official season and the long term forecast for June currently is very positive with warm and dry conditions predicted. Great news for UK growers since asparagus is a ‘sun-worshipper’, throwing up an abundance of spears when the weather is warm.

After a confusing start to the season – the earliest spears being harvested in the last days of March but then limited supply available throughout April and most of May – food lovers and patriots can now rejoice that their favourite spring vegetable is here and will be plentiful throughout the Jubilee and the preparations for the Olympics.
