Peruvian onion exports grow 22% in the first three months

Peruvian onion and shallot exports, on fresh and frozen, added up to 5.6 million Dollars in the first three months of 2012, growing 22% regarding the 4.6 million Dollars reported in the same period of 2011, according to information provided yesterday by the Society of External Commerce of Peru (ComexPeru).

He pointed out that it was becoming one of the agricultural products showing to be more dynamic regarding exports.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture (Minag), among the main regions producing onion there's Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ica and Arequipa, with 4%, 7%, 16% and 54% of the national production, respectively.

Among the main destinations Colombia is highlighted, with shipments adding up to 3 million Dollars (15% more), representing 54% of the total of exports.

Although, there are other destinations to mention for their importing dynamics as the United States, with 1.7 million Dollars (51% more), representing 30% of the exported value and Spain, with 0.7 million Dollars (35% more), representing 13% of the exported total.

Moreover, he mentioned the big growth shown by the Netherlands. Despite representing only 1% of exports, grew more than 330%.

Among the main export companies in the sector there is "Importadora y Exportadora Agromercedes" with 1.3 million Dollars (26% more), "MC & M" with 1.1 millions (258%) and "Empresa Exportadora & Importadora Marerose" with 0.5 millions (33%).

Moreover, he underlined that, according to the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO), the country that exported the most of this product during 2009 was India, followed by the Netherlands and Mexico.

In this ranking, Peru takes the 12th place in the world, showing an improvement of 5 places regarding 2008.
