Peru: Mango crops will increase for next season

"Every year the number of hectares for mango crops increases, and next season won't be an exception, it is expected for it to increase by 1,000 hectares," according to president of PROMANGO, Angel Gamarra Condori.

Angel Gamarra said that at a national level 22,000 hectares are used for planting mango, which is divided into 3 areas: San Lorenzo (Piura), which has 17,000 hectares; Motupe (Lambayeque) with 3,000 hectares and Casma (Ancash) with 2,000 hectares. Furthermore, he pointed out that from the total of the production 90% is for the mango Kent variety.

He also said that in recent years, mango exports have increased considerably, but in the last campaign the delivery of this product decreased, as a result of climate change.

"In a normal year, mango production is really huge, for example in 2010 we exported 132,000 tons (of fresh mango), but last year we only sent 61,000 tons and for this year, we also expect a decrease in exports, because the temperature is not suitable for mango production," concluded the Gamarra.
