China eases slightly on quarantine of Philippine banana exports

After over a month since impounding Philippine banana exports, China allowed the entry of several containers of the fresh fruit.

"We received word today that 30 to 40 containers have been allowed to pass in China. So that’s a little bit of good news for us," Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a news briefing on Tuesday, May 22.

She said this came after a joint team of Philippine and Chinese authorities inspected the fresh fruits.

Valte said that the Department of Agriculture "will double check all exports before leaving the country and it was also agreed with our counterparts in China that once the exports arrived there, it will be subjected to a joint inspection to resolve quickly any phytosanitary issues."

She said that upon orders of President Benigno S. Aquino III, concerned agencies are mapping out short-term measures to provide immediate assistance to the banana industry which is suffering huge losses from importation issues with China.
