Charities benefit from one Tassie spud grower's surplus

We've heard of the wine lake and also the butter mountain. Now the potato pile has led to one farmer at Gawler West just south of Ulverstone in Tasmania's north to give away his surplus potatoes.

John McKenna has grown spuds for 25 years. He is offering the potatoes in two ways. John has a contract with Simplot and is well and truly over his quota.

He says there are plenty of potatoes around the state and he doesn't want to affect the livelihood of fellow growers so if you are a charity then he is willing to hand over the potatoes at no charge.

If you buy his pea straw then he will throw in several bags of potatoes.

His offer comes as growers with contracts to supply McCain's are being offered individual deals instead of negotiations being conducted through a growers committee.

John is critical of the development and believes the growers should have held their ground.
