Namibia: Maersk remains leader in cargo shipping

Maersk has established itself as the leader in shipping in Namibia over the past 15 years. Maersk started its operations in the country in 1997 with the maiden call of the container vessel, Cornelia Maersk, at the port of Walvis Bay.

A few months later, Maersk Namibia was established and appointed as general agent in Namibia of the A.P Moller - Maersk Group. In August 1998, the company opened its doors in Lüderitz.

Maersk offers weekly services to and from Walvis Bay, fortnightly services to Lüderitz, direct sailings to and from Europe, connecting to the Mediteranean as well as direct sailings from the far East.

Manfred Dedekind of Maersk Namibia, says the company offers high quality services as it follows a stringent global policy regarding shipping and packaging and also invests heavily in research and environmental protection.

Maersk is also the only container shipping company with a presence in Lüderitz.

According to Dedekind, Maersk and its sister company, Safmarine Namibia, are extremely popular and are currently the market leaders.

"We've also invested a lot of money into education for example the building of the Mondessa Youth Centre, as Maersk has a global drive to invest in education," said Dedekind.

The company invests in different social responsibility programmes per year, focussing on education related activities.

Maersk Namibia utilises its own vessels and terminals where possible, as well as its own global on-line systems. Safmarine is separately managed and a trading name within the A.P Moller Group. Safmarine offers liner shipping services to every part of the world. The company is rapidly expanding into the east/west trade lanes and is acknowledged as a leading Africa-specialist.

Safmarine Namibia office officially opened its doors on 1 April 2000.
