Stijn Weckx, Van Dijk Foods Belgium:

"'Large volumes Spanish cherries arriving next week"

At the beginning of April, Van Dijk Foods Belgium received the first Spanish cherries. "The early varieties such as Burlat were mainly softer and now the firmer varieties are arriving. We are really at the top of the market as far as quality is concerned." Volumes are not very large as yet. "Now we are receiving a few pallets and next week we expect to receive quite a bit more. Then we will really trade in quantities" as per Stijn Weckx, sales manager.

Van Dijk Foods invest a lot in the development and quality of cherries and in Spain controls various varieties themselves. The Spanish cherry is one of the most important products in the assortment. "The cherries are marketed under the Ruby brand. This sweet firm cherry is available in various varieties and is very popular in Belgium and are available in various packings."

"We have our permanent buyers for our cherries. Because volumes are not too large as yet on average we can demand a slightly higher price." In addition to Spanish cherries Van Dijk also have nectarines and peaches in the assortment.
