For Felipe Trigueros, consultant of the House Agriculture and Agribusiness in El Salvador, an eruption would not be a major drawback for el Salvador's fruit and vegetable supply from Guatemala, because it is quite possibly that the impact of eruption would be small compared to all cultivated area of Guatemala. "The areas
grown in Guatemala are quite diversified, so a volcanic eruption right now, would not cause mayor problems," he said.
Trigueros is cautious about the areas which could be affected by a volcanic eruption and a halt to el Salvador's market supply. "Fruit and vegetables are the products that we import the most from Guatemala," he recalled.
Some studies point out that one of the major trading partners in El Salvador is Guatemala, which is the major supplier of fruits and vegetables, because domestic production fails to meet demand.
