Brazil: Grape growers certified to European standards
Grape growers in São Francisco Valley, north of Bahia, Brazil, are improving foreign sales through a certification program run by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (SECTI) within the Program to Strengthen Business Activities. Producers from the Farmer's Cooperative from Juazeiro (CAJ) are getting benefits, through CAJ networks CAJ I, CAJ II and CAJ III, and the Red Especial of Juazeiro.
The certification consultant from CAJ, Luana Carvalho, who is accompanying the work that is being done said that at the end of the certification process each cooperative receives a numbering on the box of grapes. "Importing countries request this type of certification to accept Brazilian fruit. The audit is a comprehensive analysis of all the production, verifying the structure of the estate, personal protective equipment for workers and cleaning of the packing house."
If any element fails, the producer has 28 days to make all the necessary corrections. Luana stressed that one of the most recurrent themes is the lack of inventory control of pesticides. "It's a constant process of improvement, and countries are always requiring new certifications to accept grapes grown in the region of São Francisco Valley." According to her Bahia´s production is sold to countries like U.S., England, Holland and Germany, and most of them just want seedless grapes.
According to the Secretary for Science, Technology and Innovation, Paulo Camera, "Certification guarantees the quality of grapes produced in Bahia, opening new markets for our products. Consumers are increasingly more demanding and this certification makes producers follow international standards of quality, which benefit all." He concluded.
