Canada: Greenhouse fruit vegetables sales reach $1.1 billion

According to Statistics Canada sales of greenhouse, nursery and sod products in Canada rose 1.3 per cent to nearly $3.3 billion in 2011. The increase was mostly the result of a 5.5 per cent gain in sales of greenhouse vegetables and fruits, which reached $1.1 billion.

Sales and re-sales of greenhouse flowers and plants fell 0.1 per cent to $1.4 billion, sales of nursery products declined 2.0 per cent to $632 million and sod sales and re-sales fell 2.0 per cent to $137 million.

In Alberta, Statistics Canada said sales of greenhouse, nursery and sod products fell in 2011 by 3.4 per cent to $183.2 million. Greenhouse vegetable and fruit sales were off by 5.3 per cent to $39.3 million.

Greenhouse flower and plant sales and re-sales were down 4.0 per cent to $71.1 million, nursery products rose by 7.2 per cent to $43.8 million; and sod products dropped by 12.6 per cent to $28.9 million.
