Peru: Good demand for table grape in international markets

In the face of a growing demand for Peruvian grape in international markets, there are 8 to 10 new producers every year, according to numbers from the Association of Grape Producers of Peru (Provid).

In that sense, William Daga Ávalos, national leader of innovation in orchards from the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation (INIA), affirmed that, presently, Peru is getting ready for a raise of 25% in grape harvesting, considering the efficiency of cultivation handling.

According to the specialist, only with good agricultural practices can costs be reduced by 15%, and being more efficient in the use of irrigation resources can avoid losing up to 20% of costs, mainly in the handling of pisquera grape.

According to Daga Ávalos, INIA is working in reducing the use of water, by the use of watering by stress (an exact dose in critical moments), using up to 4,500 m3/ha for pisquera grape and 3,000m3/ha for table grape, reducing up to 50% of the resource costs.

That same way, the specialist pointed to the fact that they are setting grape in fields free of virus, since this problem affects about 45% of this fruit plantations in Ica, reducing its weight and sugars considerably.
