Austrian salad vegetable season starting

There are now tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and courgettes from local cultivation available in Austria. Favourite food No:1 with the Austrians is still the tomato. Each year Austrians consume about 31,403 tons of tomatoes at a value of about 80 million Euro. In second place are the green, yellow and red peppers with a turnover of about 53 million Euro or 16,340 tons.

But not only the market figures show the popularity of tomatoes. A research last year by RollAMA, Austria's biggest household panel in the food sector, shows the same. From this research it became clear, that every second Austrian regards the tomato as his or hers most favourite salad vegetable. Cucumbers and peppers achieved second and third place respectively.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, courgettes and pumpkin are together in value at 41% of the total fresh vegetable market. Greens constitute 13% of the market and Austrian kitchen classics, such as carrots and onions each add about 10% to the vegetable turnover. In the organic segment it is mainly the courgettes, which are grown organically. Where on average about 8.7% of the salad vegetables are grown organically, almost one in three courgettes is grown organically.
