"Petra Wautraets, LTV: Export will start shortly"
Strawberry market in a temporary dip
According to Petra Wautraets of LTV, Belgian grower's organisation, the demand for strawberries is at a lower level than last week. An important buyer for Limburgse Tuinbouw Veiling is Norway and they have a national holiday on 17 May and in the week prior to this the demand for Belgian strawberries is always high, but quiet round that date," she explains. "Prices are around Euro 1,60/500 grs. To compare: "Last week they were 1,00 to 1,50 Euro higher."
"Also the cloudy weather does not play a favourable role in the sales" Petra says. Asking parties at the moment are mainly Sweden and Germany. A part also goes to the Netherlands, because they have a shortage and are past their peak." The commercial manager expects a good season. "The supply of strawberries from tunnels is increasing and in a few weeks time the open ground harvest starts. It is expected that the export will increase and more will go in the direction of Sweden and Russia. Also in the direction of England expectations are high this year."
"Till the beginning of last week our subsidiary company Elsanta in Sweden imported Spanish, Italian and Belgian strawberries. The quality of the import strawberries from Italy and Spain is not all that good and therefore we changed completely to Belgian, which are much loved because of their quality and taste."
