"Marc de Kimpe, Kimco: "Filling up holes in various markets"

"Belgium: "Carrot prices up considerably"

"It has been rather busy on the carrot market for a few weeks now" Marc Kimpe of Kimco says. "Interest from various countries is high and it is mainly a matter of satisfying the demand. As a result prices have increased quite a bit and compared to a few weeks ago have increased by 15 cents."

Marc mentions that the demand comes from various countries, "We export to countries such as Germany, Eastern Block, Poland and the Czech Republic. Everywhere we replenish shortages to a certain extent. At the moment nothing goes to Russia, but all through the year very little went there. The trend is that less goes there all the time as they become more self sufficient. An incident like the drought of last year would have to take place, before volumes will be sent. In a normal year we hardly export to Russia."

The trader mentions that there is even export to France. "The harvest in France is later than normal as a result of the cold weather" he explains. And that also makes a difference to the supply. "They do not export as yet. The volumes from that country will no doubt arrive from next week. Also in Spain they are behind with harvesting because of rainy weather," Marc explains. The exporter expects the market to remain stable for the time being. "We can for a while fill the holes. In a few days time the new French, Spanish and Italian carrots will be on the market in abundance and then it will possible change again."

This year the harvest yields were a lot less and sorting took more time in general. "Nevertheless we can speak of a good quality" Marc concludes.
