Argentina: Worries about citrus commerce

Short demand and recession create uncertainty for the campaign. There are good perspectives on the Russian market.

"Today there is uncertainty about the commercial development of the citrus campaign, if you account for factors like the diplomatic conflict with Spain, markets not demanding that much and the strong recession in the Old Continent. The prospects for Russia are completely different, an important buyer started the commercial exchange movement in Argentina," explained HernĂ¡n Salas, engineer in the Citrus Program at the Agro-Industrial Experimental Station Obispo Colombres (Eeaoc).

Late rain could have positively affected the present production, together with the present temperatures, but this is not happening right now, as he explained.

Even so, the last rains prevented the beginning of harvesting, as some farms had their paths damaged, causing operational problems and damage to some fruit.

A drop in production levels is confirmed in comparison to the last campaign but it is still early to say what percentage.

In general, due to less rain during the present campaign, the health quality of the fruit is quite good.
