Peruvian President's trip to Asia opens field for fruit exports
President Ollanta Humala's trip to Japan and South Korea from May 8th to 12th has generated several reactions among specialists. Some explain that it will strengthen the North American Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the two Asian powers and promote investments in the country.
Peruvian grapes are well accepted in the Chinese market, it can also have the same effect in Japan and South Korea.
It is noted that due to the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between Peru and Japan, which came into force on the 1st of March, will allow greater diversification of exports of both countries and lower tariffs by 99% of products that are being exchanged between these countries, for ten years.
According to the Chamber of Commerce of Lima (CCL), the agreement would double the exports of non traditional products in the next three years reaching USD 268 million.
Fruits with opportunities
Peruvian fruits, like grapes, mangoes and avocados also have a great future for their entry into Japan and South Korea.
According to statistics of the Foreign Trade Center (CCEX) of the CCL, trade in 2011 between Peru and Japan reached USD 3,388 million (USD 2,175 million were from exports and USD 1,123 million from imports).
