Jaap Kodde (Flevostar Dronten)
"Surprisingly enough some potato varieties in short supply"
The market for new potatoes is slow at the moment, according to Jaap Kodde of potato wholesaler Flevostar Dronten. "The supply from Malta and Cyprus is rather down and it is too cold for a good demand. The price of the old potatoes is still at a terrible level. "But it is striking that some varieties are giving out, such as the Irene and the Bildstar. For some varieties the stock of potatoes for processing is dwindling faster than expected. This is also caused by quality problems.
Export of potatoes is mainly to Eastern Europe and Russia at the moment. The Russian market is unpredictable, but Poland is doing well now and there is a good demand from Eastern European countries, such as Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia," Jaap sums up. "Furthermore there is a lot of demand from the fodder industry. But we are already, looking at the new season, because we still have a few weeks to wait."
