Wim Bouden, Kiem-X:

Belgium: Kiem-X adds organic sprouting seeds to range

Sprouting seed grower and supplier Kiem-X from Nevele has something new in the assortment organic sprouting seeds, "In this way we can offer an even wider assortment to companies" Wim Bouden says enthusiastically. "We did not discover a direct demand in the market, but clients are glad that we have a large supply. Therefore we supplemented our assortment. The clients we now serve are very satisfied". Wim and Isabelle together with six employees have grown sprouting seeds since 2006.

The organic assortment consists for the time being of leek-, lucern-, red cabbage- and daico sprouting seeds. The grower explains that the difference in organic and conventional cultivation is minimal. "It cannot be determined by tasting, but the organic sprouting seeds are untreated and the mother plants have not been treated with plant protection means or fertilizer. The seeds are always removed from the mother plant. As far as taste is concerned there is therefore hardly any difference."

"At the moment demand for sprouting seeds is low," explains the grower. "As soon as the weather improves again we also experience a certain growth. March was a very good month, but April was disappointing this year. I expect an increasing demand for these healthy delicacies, because sprouting seeds are possibly the only vegetables one can eat super fresh all year round."
