Italy: Innovation in production of table grapes in Sardinia

In Sardinia, the production of table grapes represents a new sector of the fruit farming which has been improving in the last decade. First, it was obtained by means of the espalier practice. Recently innovations in cultivation techniques have been introduced as well as new varieties and a better presentation of the product on the market.

Now table grapes have become competitive and are able to satisfy the domestic demand, above all in the summer season with the arrival of about 1 million tourists on the island.

For the volume of grapes sold Sardinia is at the sixth position in Italy after Apulia, Sicily, Abruzzi, Lazio and Basilicata. The main acreages of vineyards are situated in the province of Cagliari (744 hectares) and Sassari (473 hectares). They represent 86% of the regional surfaces aimed to the production of table grapes. The total regional production is about 11,200 tons. (In the graphic beside, in green, the areas where table grapes are produced).

On May 9th 2012 there will be the 15th National Conference about Table Grapes in Villasor, Cagliari.
