Austria: partially self-sufficient

The Austrian agriculture and horticulture has only been able to cover a part of the domestic demand in season 2010/2011, as can be read on the Austrian newspaper Die Presse's website. The demand for grain and potatoes was covered 88%. For wine this percentage was 66%, for vegetables 61%, for fruit 52%, for oil seed 50%, and for vegetable oil 26%, figures from Statistik Austria revealed. The value of agrarian imports increased form 8.2 to 9.3 billion Euro.

The use of potatoes decreased in 2010/2011 per head of the Austrian population from 62.4 kg to 61.1 kg. For vegetables this figure decreased from 110.0 to 109.1 kg, for fruit from 77.1 to 74.8 kg.

In the past year there were less fruit and vegetables produced in Austria. The production volume of potatoes decreased by 7% to 671,000 tonnes and that of fruit decreased by 15% to 429,657 tonnes. To cover the domestic demand, 1.3 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables and 217,800 tonnes of potatoes were imported.
