Good start of German kohlrabi season

The sale of kohlrabi in Germany started well in week 17. A large number of offers and the generally decreased prices have, together with the cooler weather up to now caused a good selling period on the German market.

According to the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) in week 17, kohlrabi was on special offer with ten German trading chains and regional shops. Prices varied from 0.39 to 0.79 Euro each. In Italy the harvest is just about over. This was also clear from the weaker quality of the leaves. Not much is being imported from there. It is expected that Spain will still supply during the next two weeks.

In the German region Pfaltz the harvest from the advanced open ground cultivation will start at the end of week 17. However, weather conditions are not conducive to the growth of kohlrabi, as a result of which the first harvests will not be very large. Because of the fact that less kohlrabi can be imported from Italy the possibilities of a reasonably good starting phase of this season are not bad, however.
