Brazil: Jardinópolis avocado exported to the Netherlands
João Gilberto Bonella shows his avocado variety for exporting, cultivated in São Bento
The reason for the compulsory tracking is to identify the fruit's origin, one of EureGap's requirements. Jardinópolis avocados are going to the Netherlands. Today, supermarkets in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague and Utrecht sell these fruits.
According to the daily newspaper, the creator of this link is João Gilberto Bonella, an electrical engineer by profession and fruit farmer at heart. His success is mainly due to an association with Jaguacy de Brazil, a producer and exporter of avocados, with headquarters in Bauru, São Paulo.
"Our avocados, in previous years, were part of the French and Danish tables. Now the fruit is going to the Netherlands", affirms Bonella.
This year were collected 100,000 kilos (25,000 kilos per hectare), with a price of R$1.20 per kilo for the producer. The harvest ended three weeks ago and the fruit has been sent to Jaguacy, to be exported to Europe. A 4 kilo box can be sold for up to R$16.
