Brazil: Kiwi producers expect 20% more this season

Fruit recollection started in Río Grande do Sul, the biggest national producer. With the good quality they expect better prices.

In a producer's farm in Farringdon, Sierra Gaucha (Brazil) were planted five hectares of kiwi. Expectations for this farm are that 100 tons will be collected, some 10% more than in the previous season.

The whole production will be sold to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states. The price varies between R$0.80 and R$1.20 per kilo, depending on the variety.

The low production costs raise income for producers. Expectations are that 2,000 tons will be collected this season, some 20% more than last year.

The good productivity is affected mainly by the weather. Cold during winter, followed by a good spring that helped flowering.

The fruit's quality was also helped as it is within the norms required by the Ministry of Agriculture. The producer collects a sample and extracts the juice to measure the sugar levels. If it gets 6º or more, it can be collected.

Brazil doesn't produce enough kiwi to supply the internal market, so extra stocks are imported from Italy and Chili.
