Canada: BC cherries to arrive a week early JIND Fruit Co. announce

Osoyoos cherries are set to ripen five to seven days earlier than expected this year, Jesse Sandhu, JIND Fruit Co.’s chief orchard officer, announced today.

Cherry trees are in full bloom throughout JIND’s Osoyoos orchards. They presented the first cherry blossoms in Canada. In March, the cherry trees in JIND’s greenhouse (a pilot project) were the first to bloom in North America, said Sandhu.

"This has been an awesome growing season for us so far," he said. "The weather’s been consistently warm, and that’s great for our cherries."

"Returns are usually better with an earlier season," he explained. Canadian retailers are more likely to buy Canadian cherries during an early season, rather than commit to Washington-grown cherries, so an early season is a good season for the BC economy.

JIND Summer Nights cherries should hit shelves by the end of June. Sandhu estimates that his company will ship at least 15 per cent more cherries than last year, when a cool spring caused Osoyoos cherries to ripen about two weeks later than usual. And two weeks is an eternity in BC’s fruit business.

This earlier blessing is looking like a boon to the BC cherry industry, said Sandhu, whose company will be picking, packing and shipping the sweet fruit into September.
