Nearly 600 tons of avocados are being exported, in the season that is about to end, to various international markets, representing almost 50 percent of the Michoacan avocado performance, the first producer in the world.
However the Department of Agriculture does not contribute to the promotional campaigns that are being developed by producers and packer-exporters in Canada and Japan, which could decrease the demand in these sites.
With respect to promotion the American Union, the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers-Exporters of Michoacan (APEAM) and the Association of Mexican Hass Avocado Importers (MHAIA), have invested USD23 million.
This was announced by the APEAM President, Ricardo Vega Lopez, who said "we are just 2 months away from the end of the 2011-2012 season. We will exceed 350,000 tons sent to the U.S., with prices that are not so extreme as those of last year, but quite adequate, allowing producers to recover a bit, since last year, although the fruit was very expensive there were those who had almost no harvest and this year the harvested volume was greater."
On the other hand we see how exports to other destinations, in order of importance Japan, Canada and Central America, have rebounded in a major way and will reach almost 100,000 tons of export to those places."
"If we add 350,000 tons or more to the United States, about 100,000 to other international markets, plus the avocado that is processed, we are exporting about 600,000 tons, equivalent to over 50 percent of what is produced in our state," said Lopez.
