Artichoke and cardoon event

Italy: Nunhems a major player at International Symposium

During the VIII International Symposium on Artichoke, Cardoon and their wild relatives, held from April 10-13 in Viterbo, an underlying message became clear: scientists and other specialists consider hybrid artichoke varieties selected by Nunhems for commercial elevation to be fundamental points of reference within the crop community.

Nunhems, who was among the major sponsors of the initiative, addressed a qualified audience – researchers, scientists, and professionals – about the latest hybrid varieties positioned within its market segments. Examples included purple types (Opal F1, Opera F1*, Nun 4051 AR F1* and Concerto F1) and green types (Symphony F1, Madrigal F1, Sambo F1* and Nun 4011 AR F1*), all of which are well-suited for both the fresh market and processing industries. Nunhems’ featured varieties attracted great interest among conference attendees.

During the Symposium, several aspects of the current state of research on varieties and cultivation of the artichoke were explored, both in Italy and worldwide. Among the topics were the crop’s health benefits (in Iran, researchers are studying antioxidant properties) and resistance to abiotic stresses such as water, light, temperature and more.

In addition to discussions covering industry news and scientific reports, visits to nursery and field trials were staged, where participants were shown highly publicized varieties, including Nunhems’ hybrids.

Vito Carrieri, Nunhems Artichoke Sales Specialist, explained: "The conference provided an opportunity to review the current status of world production of artichoke and cardoon and the future prospects of growth for these crops. Do not forget that Italy, with over 50,000 hectares of production, is the dominant growing region in Europe, followed by Spain and France."
