Spain: Stone fruit and citrus outlook week 18
With regards to nectarines, picking of yellow flesh variety Zincal 4, is due to commence this week. Polytunnel cultivated nectarines will be finished this week, or early next week at the latest.
Yellow flesh nectarines, being able to bear post harvest handling and transportation better than white flesh varieties, are expected to bring prices down in Western and upper Northern European regions.
Seville and Cordoba
Similar to Huelva in that considerable volumes of yellow flesh nectarines are expected from next week. More information on this will be available in week 19.
Both yellow fleah nectarines and white flesh Plawhite will be picked. Yellow flesh peach, PlaGold will be starting during the end of week 19.
Murcia and Extramdura region
The first nectarines from Murcia will be available from week 19, though large volumes are not anticipated until week 20.
In Extramdura the season is expected to start in week 21, with the nectarine variety Big Ban. With regards to peaches the yellow flesh variety, Spring Lady, is expected to be ready in time for week 22.
LĂ©rida and Huesca region
More information on this region will be available in week 19, but picking is expected to start week 23 or 24 of yellow nectarine Early Top and yellow peach Early Rich.
Valencia
Medlar/Loquat variety, Abgelino, continues to be commercialised and will be available until week 22-23. The domestic market and Italy are the main destinations.
Citrus outlook
Frost means that a drop in production of certain varieties is expected for the 2012-2013 season. For example, Navelines from Valencia.
Clementines have not been as damaged by the frost and this season is expected to deliver an average crop.
More information on the citrus outlook will be available as the flowering period progresses.
Navel Lane Late and Navell Powell from Valencia are both in the market with good quality. Valencia Midnight and Delta Seedless from the South of Spain are being picked.
lemon Verna is being picked in good volumes.
