Vegetable growers in the Valle del Yaqui, fear that the bad luck they have had this cycle, as a result of low prices on their crops, could continue until the next planting season, since there are several international factors that have influenced prices, said Carlos Alberto Esquer Lopez.
The president of the Vegetable Growers Association of Yaqui and Mayo announced that the low price situation has affected them since early 2012, because there was a sufficient supply in the United States due to the normal cycle they had, hence they do not need more Mexican production to meet demand.
He said that the tomato and potato crops were the most affected, because so far prices have not recovered.
In the specific case of potatoes, he said that even though the harvest was practically finished, they have not been able to obtain better prices, so producers stocked up pending products that can pick up the tuber cost in the domestic market.
Esquer Lopez said that in the case of chilli, watermelons, cantaloupes and some other vegetable prices have behaved normally. However the trend has been declining in recent weeks.
