"EU producers want creation of "European Garlic Quality" brand"

The garlic representative at ASAJA-Cuenca, Antonio Escudero, analysed suggestions at the meeting with the Spanish-French-Italian garlic contact group on April 11th in France. Amongst the suggestions there was a call to create a brand for European Garlic Quality. They insist on the need to start information and promotion campaigns to give consumers some conscience about the quality of European garlic and the importance of consuming domestic products. During the meeting, they also refused unanimously for the European Union to acknowledge that garlic produced in China was the same quality as EU garlic.

Escudero highlighted the importance of the EU to carry out exhaustive controls to end with the fraudulent entrance of garlic from third-party countries, with prices considerably less than European production costs. As for the sector's profitability, Escudero pointed that after a commercialization campaign where garlic was sold 10% above production costs, is right now being sold again under cost price.

ASAJA also calculated a 10% reduction in the harvest regarding last year, due to low temperatures and drought.
