Spain: Tecnova bets on improving post-harvest quality in horticulture

Foundation Tecnova supports the importance of the optimization of the horticultural manipulation processes in the industry. Andrés Conesa, Agronomist engineer, had a technical journey at Expo Agro about the optimization of manipulation processes.

Fruits and vegetables keep on living even after harvest, the maturing process goes on and the process of ageing in every case until its end.

In an attempt to preserve quality and reduce economic losses due to an inadequate post-harvest handling, Tecnova works several lines, highlighting the reduction of mechanical damage and the application of emerging technologies such as ultraviolet light.

Mechanical damage can be produced in the field, during the harvesting, manipulation, transport or storing. A problem in those cases is that, even if some damaged fruit present symptoms before storing, in some cases, they are not initially perceived, a consequence of such damages, is mould or the incidence of changes that damage its quality.

Commercial sorting lines are a point in the commercial chain were fruit can suffer mechanical damage. Losses due to mechanical damages can reach 20% depending on the product, maturity stage, swelling stage, etc.

At Tecnova, the working methods to help reducing the presence of damages include:

• Line analysis
• Damage quantification
• Data interpretation
• Lines improvement proposals
