Low temperatures and humidity during Holy Week didn't affect the fruit's quality, which continues to be excellent. During the first part of the campaign prices were seen as good by the traders and sales were above those from the previous campaign, by 20%. Since April, prices had a setback, due mainly to the accumulation of fruit due to stores being closed during Holy Week festive days.
Prices received by farmers for strawberries, during week 15, was around to 0.70 to 0.90 Euro per kilo, according to sources. Although, this price level is qualified as normal for this period.
In the national market, the price for Huelva strawberries in the main small distribution stores, during week 15, varied between 2.25 and 2.45 Euro per kilo, in the 1 kilo tub format. For the 500 grams tubs the prices varied between 2.30 and 2.50 Euro per kilo.
In the same week, quotations in the national market of Mercamadrid were around 1.26 Euro per kilo. Exporting levels for the European markets was already at 100% of the weekly exporting capacity. From now on, Huelva's strawberries will find more competition due to the increase in the presence of strawberries from France and Italy. Moreover, the offer abundance adds up to competition from other seasonal fruits.
All this makes it more difficult for prices to recover.
In the wholesale markets in France, quotes from the last week for the Spanish strawberry went down during the week, from 3.00 Euro per kilo to 1.50 Euro per kilo, in the 250 grams packages. In the German wholesale markets, the price for the Spanish strawberry also evolved on a descending direction, from 2.95 Euro per kilo in the begin of the week, in the Koln market, down to 2.00 Euro per kilo by the end of the week, in the Hamburg market.
Quotations for Huelva strawberry in the London market were kept at 2.87 Euro per kilo during the whole week 15.
