German consumers bought 400 million euro worth of fairtrade products in 2011

Fairtrade growing in Germany

The German consumers bought fairtrade products to the value of 400 million Euro last year, 18% more than in 2010. With this 2011 is the eighth year in a row in which fairtrade grew in Germany. The total achieved turnover with fairtrade products has increased eight times since 2002.
 
During last year 8,800 tons of fairtrade coffee was sold in Germany, 22% more than in 2010. The market share of this segment is about 2%. The sale of fairtrade bananas increased by 59% to 11,862 tons. This is a market share of 2,1%. Also fairtrade flowers were sold a lot. The Germans spent 30 million euro on that.
Last year 172 new fairtrade products entered the German market. At the moment 200 licence holders offer about 2,000 fairtrade products. Products with fairtrade hallmark are available in about 36,000 businesses.
