German catering banks on frozen vegetables

Restaurants and cafeterias in Germany have started using more frozen vegetables in the past year. According to current figures from the frozen food branch wholesalers bought almost 197,000 tonnes of frozen vegetables, around 6.6% more than in 2010. The sales of all frozen food to wholesalers grew by 2.4% to 1.6 million tonnes.

Consumers, on the other hand, bought less frozen food. The sales in the retail business decreased slightly. They bought ready meals from the frozen section instead (+2.1%). Consumers also spent more on frozen goods. The branch increased its sales by 3.2% to 11.8 million Euro. Although the total sales remained almost equal at 3.3 million tonnes (+0.8%)

When the figures are converted into the use per head of population, each German ate 40.4 kilos of frozen food. The average use has been rising for years. In 200 the use per head of population was a lot lower, with 32.7 kilos per person.
