Fruit stickers to show grower videos to customers

US: Chelan Fresh pioneers new technology

Thanks to a new databar technology - greenscans - consumers will be able to view a grower video on sixteen different apples supplied by Chelan Fresh, by scanning the sticker on the apple. The video connects the consumer, regardless of geography, directly to the apple orchards of Chelan, Washington.

For a demonstration scan the databar on the apple you will see in the following picture: Click here

Greenscans was developed to allow companies to use their existing product databars as "prime real estate." Consumers can now download a free app to their smartphone, greenscans,(gscan.it) and begin scanning any product with a databar to learn about the product and company. Information on the smarthphone screen could be a direct link to the company and/or social media sites, recipes, product education (how to cut and prepare the item), cross-promotions and /or call to action – invite to "share" or "like" a product on Facebook. The long range applications of greenscans will also include data mining and a "consumer alert" should there be a product recall.

With the tremendous growth of smartphone sales, consumers are becoming increasingly shopper savvy relying on apps for their shopping decisions.

With more than 50% of US adults using their mobile phones when shopping in retail stores, the introduction of the greenscans mobile platform to consumers and retailers has been well received.

Retailers can download collateral to place at POS, on their website and in print when the product is on ad.

This is the first technology of this kind for databars with long reaching effects on not only the produce industry but all dry goods. Commodities that have a generic program in place from their board and/or commission can have that message on all their bulk items along with links to each grower, with the opportunity to add their content. Companies partnering with nonperishable commodities will be able to have that information on their databars, as well as, the partnering product. Finally, complex produce items, for example mangos, will be able to educate the consumer through the stickers on the fruit; how to cut the fruit, ripeness, recipes etc.

Chelan Fresh wanted to create a connection with the customer, whether they were in their backyard or purchasing the product on the East Coast. The grower videos, give a real "crunch" factor to the products. "We recognized that this technology is a growing trend and can use it as part of our marketing campaign to engage with consumers and have them connect to our social media sites," Mac Riggan, vice president of marketing commented.

Greenscans is pleased to partner with Chelan Fresh to launch this databar technology. Paul Engelman, greenscans CEO, states the company’s mission; "Our corporate mission is to "efficiently track our global perishable food supply chain, validate its authenticity, and be the informational and social conduit to safely and privately share mutually beneficial content and experiences with consumers." To view the Chelan Fresh apple grower videos, download greenscans to your smartphone, from the app store, and scan the databar, with the caveat that the scan has worked in all locations, in particular the supermarket, with the exception of locations with high firewalls.

Greenscans is delighted with the response to the initial release of the greenscans app which currently connects ALL registered databars to standard GS1 information by default and provides custom messaging for our current participating companies. Our next release in May will dramatically expand the apps ability to connect the consumer to the product, the grower and related content. Currently, content (recipes, nutrition information, website and social media sites) is available only with companies that have signed up to apply the information on their databars.
